Why Marc Antony is a Round Character :: essays research papers
William Shakespeare wonderfully develops the character Marc Antony in his play Julius Caesar to be a round character. Round characters meaning a character that has many traits and isnââ¬â¢t predictable. Antony, who seems to not have many different traits at the beginning of Julius Caesar, really starts showing his real self after Caesarââ¬â¢s death. That also shows that he is unpredictable. à à à à à Antonyââ¬â¢s monologues and soliloquies really help to show readers Antony as a round character. A few traits these soliloquies and monologues show are that he is manipulative and smart, yet also caring and loving. Other traits Antony shows include agreeable, but capable of being in charge; athletic; popular; and able to give recognition where it is deserved. Like most people, Antony has both bad and good traits, and his speeches reflect that. à à à à à The manipulative nature of Antony proves true two times. The first time is when Antony is speaking at Caesarââ¬â¢s funeral. Antony is manipulating the crowd by using pauses and by talking Brutus up. This is what Antony says in that instance, ââ¬Å"Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; and Brutus is an honorable man.â⬠(Act III, scene ii, lines 94-95) Antony is saying maybe Brutus is right because he says Caesar was ambitious, and Brutus is, in fact, a very honorable man. In another instance he says, ââ¬Å"Have patience, gentle friends, I must not read it,â⬠speaking of Caesarââ¬â¢s will. (Act III, scene ii, line 141) Antony is trying to get the people excited about the will, so they will tell him to read it by acting like he shouldnââ¬â¢t read it. The second time Antony shows that he is manipulative when he wants to change Caesarââ¬â¢s will. At that time Antony proves himself by saying, ââ¬Å"But, Lepidus, go you to Caesarââ¬â¢s house; Fetc h the will hither, and we shall determine how to cut off some charge in legacies.â⬠(Act IV, scene I, lines 7-9) Antony is telling Lepidus to go get the will so they can change it. Antonyââ¬â¢s ability to be manipulative is well proven in these instances. à à à à à The loving side of Antony that allows him to give recognition where it is deserved is shown a few times. One time comes close after Caesarââ¬â¢s death. Antony says, ââ¬Å"Thou art the ruins of the noblest man that ever lived in the tide of the times,â⬠and it shows his love for Caesar by saying that the noblest man he ever knew was now dead.

The Theme of Madness Characterized by Ophelia and Hamlet in Hamlet by William Shakespeare In Hamlet, Shakespeare incorporates a theme of madness with two characters: one truly mad, and one only acting mad to serve a motive. The madness of Hamlet is frequently disputed. This paper argues that the contrapuntal character in the play, namely Ophelia, acts as a balancing argument to Hamlet's madness or sanity. Ophelia's breakdown and Hamlet's "north-north-west" brand of insanity argue for Hamlet having a method to his seeming insanity. The play offers a character on each side of sanity. While Shakespeare does not directly put Ophelia's insanity, or breakdown, against Hamlet's own madness, there is indeed a clear definitiveness in Ophelia's condition and a clear uncertainty in Hamlet's madness. Obviously, Hamlet's character offers more evidence, while Ophelia's breakdown is quick, but more conclusive in its precision. Shakespeare offers clear evidence pointing to Hamlet's sanity beginning with the first scene of the play. Hamlet begins with guards whose main importance in the play is to give credibility to the ghost. If Hamlet were to see his father's ghost in private, the argument for his madness would greatly improve. Yet, not one, but three men together witness the ghost before even thinking to notify Hamlet. As Hamlet says, "O that this too too sullied flesh would meltâ⬠¦" we can see that he is depressed and appalled, but it does not mean he is insane. As Horatio says, being the only one of the guards to play a significant role in the rest of the play, "Before my God, I might not this believe/ Without the sensible and true avouch/ Of mine own eyes." Horatio, who appears frequently throughout the play, acts as an unquestionably sane alibi to Hamlet again when framing the King with his reaction to the play. That Hamlet speaks to the ghost alone detracts somewhat from its credibility, but all the men were witness to the ghost demanding they speak alone. Horatio offers an insightful warning, "What if it tempts you toward the flood, my lord, Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff That beetles o'er his base into the sea, And there assume some other horrible form. Which might deprive your sovereignty of reason, And draw you into madness? Think of it." Horatio's comment may be where Hamlet gets the idea to use a plea of insanity to work out his plan.

According to ââ¬Å"Class Actions under the Federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991â⬠à (2010)à ââ¬Å"The TCPA is a federal statute enacted in 1991 that prohibits unsolicited advertising by facsimile, automated recorded telephone messages, advertising calls to cellular telephones or other devices where the customer must pay to receive the call, and solicitation after consumers have included their names on the no-call list.The creation of the act was formed to be addressing the consumer concerns about unsolicited advertisement via communicational methods. One-concern consumers had been intrusive behaviors of calls. Numerous consumers considered a nd found it inappropriate when telemarketers called during family time, early in the morning or late at night. Because of the random and interrupting call from the telemarketers.Often consumers were disturbed and agitated because of the telemarketer calls interrupted important moments in the consumer lives. For example, in the moment when the consumer family is enjoying dinner while sharing exciting stories at the table and at same time indulgin the meal that was prepared by the grandmother. All of a sudden, the phone rang and purported to be important but unfortunately, discovered only to be a telemarketer interrupting the family mealtime together.Furthermore, consumers believed that it was a violation of their privacy. Another concern consumers had was that there was no method to call back if the consumer wanted to respond to the telemarketers. Although Protection Act (TCPA), 1991 created certain provision that telemarketers has to oblige to the regulations and criterions within t he act. There were certain consumers, who wanted to block telemarketers from contacting them via communicational devices.Because of increasing numbers complaints from consumers to block telemarketers, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) conveyed to the Congress to pass the statute called the Do Not Call Implementation Act, 2003. Some of these acts are: the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (1974), Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970), Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, (1986), The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (1991), and Do not Call Implementation Act (2003). Presently the Federal Government has numerous acts that authorize the government to implement consumer protection; however, this paper will address only two of them. We will discuss the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991 and the Do not Call Implementation Act of 2003. Information technology has increased significantly over time. The caller Identification technology and other telephone number capturing systems have placed the consumer at the mercy of telemarketers and other nuisance callers. The increasing use of the advanced information technology such as automated and prerecorded messaging to consumer homes caused many complaints to government authorities. The Congress and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established the TCPA, and 12 years later the Do Not Call Implementation Act. According to Federal Communications Commission (2008), the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991 was created by Congress to ensure that telephone marketing callers, ââ¬Å"provide his or her name, the name of the person or entity on whose behalf the call is being made, and a telephone number or address at which that person or entity can be contacted. Unwanted telemarketing calls often interrupted something important, and there is no callback number, and no way to reach the caller, to say do not call again. These are some of many consumer concerns about unsolicited telephone marketing calls that caused the establishment of the TCPA and the national Do Not Call List. According to Watson (2008), in 2003 the United States Congress passed the Do Not Call Implementation Act. This act was put into place for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to create and maintain a Do Not Call Registry for the Do. Not Call List. The forerunner of the national do not call list had a few flaws. One flaw was consumer was forced to register objections with each business to be placed on the specific do not call list. In addition, over time advanced technology brought on the ability to call many telephone numbers merely by clicking a computer key that sends automated and prerecorded messages. The technology was so pervasive that thousands of unsolicited calls could be made with very limited employee time. The Do Not Call Implementation Act of 2003 provided additional protection to consumers from unwanted phone calls from telemarketers. Instead of registering with each business or entity, a consumer has to request placement of his or her telephone number on the do not call list or registry. The Do Not Call Implementation Act makes the Do Not Call Registry permanent, which means a consumer, has to register their number only once. The only time a customer has to reregister is when his or her phone number was disconnected for some reason or the customer was assigned a different number. The two Acts covered in this paper, although an excellent try to eliminate unwanted calls and provide protection for consumers, left areas that required attention. For example, charities and any entity that the consumer had previous business relationship was left covered under these Acts. The good news is that according to Watson (2008), the Federal Trade Commission closed one of the major loopholes still open to telemarketers. With any luck, the days of unsolicited phone calls may be coming to an end. A Teacherââ¬â¢s Education And how it Affects Student Learning
In 2005, the U.S. will have over 54 million children in schools and teachers will total 3.5 million. à To keep up with this number, 200,000 teachers will need to be recruited annually.The inability to produce this many is causing states to issue emergency certification programs lasting only 4-8 weeks and then throwing these teachers into schools, many of them inner-city.à But even with the No Child Left Behind policies in place, America is still severely lacking in achievement levels and grades then other countries.à This is because the level of education a teacher has influences how well a student achieves and teachers are not getting the proper training or education needed.There are statistics coming out that show that a studentââ¬â¢s achievement really relies on what a teacherââ¬â¢s educational level is.à Research shows that the quality of teaching is actually the largest school related factor associated with achievement.à A study in Tennessee and Dallas showed that a good teacher could raise a childââ¬â¢s grade by a whole level over the course of a year.The good grades were found to be cumulative, showing kids who had a good teacher for three straight years rose from the 59th percentile in fourth grade to the 76th percentile in the sixth grade.à But kids that had teachers, who were classified not as effective as the first group, went from the 60th percentile in fourth grade to the 42nd percentile by the time they reached sixth grade.à (Robert Rothman, 2004.)As America grows, itââ¬â¢s no surprise that more kids are coming into the school systems.à The problem is that universities canââ¬â¢t produce enough teachers to keep up.à That is a reason why 41 states have developed Alternative programs aimed at getting people a teacherââ¬â¢s certificate in four to eight weeks.These programs train a person in basic training for the classroom, basic training on how to make lesson plans and they reduce the requirements for state licenses, so that they can be hired for an emergency.à The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellenceââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Passport to Teaching Certificationâ⬠reduce the time a person spends studying to teach.à It also eliminates practice teaching in a classroom.à Since teaching requires practice and mastery of the subject, without practice teaching, the person just gets rushed through to the real classroom.Teach for America gives students a summer crash course in teaching and then gives them a class, usually inner city, the following fall.à They have an astronomical 75% turnover rate though!à Most emergency hiring happens in inner-city schools, which means that these very basically trained teachers are thrown in the most disadvantaged schools.à (Reg Weaver, 2004.)A national sample of teachers showed that if they had lower academic qualifications, they were less likely to stay teaching.à 80,000 teachers have come out of these alternative programs, but only 40% have stayed teaching past year three.à Statistics are supporting that the ââ¬Å"strongest negative predictor of a stateââ¬â¢s student achievement are the proportion of new teachers who are uncertified and the proportion who hold less then a minor in the field they teach.â⬠à (quote1.)At the annual American Educational Research Association meeting in 2004, they brought to light that Kindergarten kids are scoring 1.26 test score points lower with teachers who were issued an emergency license them by a fully-certified teacher.à The American Institute for Research also found that 8th graders scored 9% higher in math if they had teachers who specialized in math and had a certificate in math.

Basketball is a very popular sport worldwide.Basketball is now the second most popular sport in the world. Womenââ¬â¢s basketball is also a popular sport, even though it does not receive nearly as much attention as menââ¬â¢s basketball. Basketball has been played in the Summer Olympic Games since 1936. HISTORY In early December 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts invented an indoor game called basketball. He invented the sport to keep his students from becoming bored during the winter.Naismith wrote the basic rules and then nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot tall pole. Unlike modern basketball hoops, the bottom of the peach-basket was still there, so after a point was scored, somebody had to get the ball out of the basket with a long stick. Over time, people made a hole at the bottom of the basket so the ball could go through more easily. The score of the first game of basketball ever played was 1 ââ¬â 0. There is a sculpture in Springfield, where the first game was played. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is also in Springfield. RULES AND THE GAME The aim of basketball is to score more points than your opponents. Baskets can be worth 1, 2, or 3 points. You get points by shooting the ball into the opponentsââ¬â¢ basket. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Equipment The court, where the game is played, is a rectangle shape, and at both endlines there is a goal called a ââ¬Å"hoopâ⬠in the shape of a circular basket with the bottom cut out. In each game of basketball these things are required: Basketball Basketball court Basketball hoop and backboard Players Referee Teams Basketball is played with two teams, with 5 players from each team on the court at one time. The players that are not on the court can sit on the bench; the maximum number of players on the bench differs by league. In international play, a maximum of 7 players are allowed on the bench, resulting in a roster of 12 players. The NBA has 13-player rosters; college and high school teams usually have 15-player rosters. When a player wants to substitute for another player on the court they let the score bench know. The referees will signal for the player waiting to come onto the court. The player that went into the game is now playing and the player that was playing is sitting on the bench. Each team is allowed to have a coach and can have an assistant coach if they want. On the bench with the substitutes, a team is allowed to have up to five team followers, such as a manager, a doctor and an interpreter. Playing Regulations A game of basketball is made up of four quarters, each ten (or in the National Basketball Association 12,) minutes long. At the start of every game the referee throws the basketball up in the air, and one player from each team tries to hit it to their teammates, that is called a ââ¬Å"jump ball.â⬠At the start of each quarter the team who has the possession arrow pointing towards their hoop gets the ball. Then the arrow is switched, and the next team gets the ball next quarter. After four quarters, the team who scores the most points wins. If the two teams score the same number of points, there is a five-minute ââ¬Å"overtimeâ⬠to see who can score more points. ââ¬Å"Overtimeâ⬠can be played over and over until one team finally scores more points. While playing the game, players on one team try to stop players on the other team from scoring. Each normal score is worth two points; however, if a player throws the ball into the hoop from behind the large arced line on the court, called the ââ¬Å"3-point line,â⬠the score is worth three points. If you do something illegal in the game, it is called a ââ¬Å"foul.â⬠If you foul someone on the other team while he is shooting the basketball, the player who was fouled gets to shoot ââ¬Å"free throwsâ⬠from the ââ¬Å"foul lineâ⬠. A free throw is a shot that no one is allowed to try to block. Each successful free throw is worth one point. If you foul a player who is not shooting, the other team gets the ball, and can throw it ââ¬Å"in boundsâ⬠from the ââ¬Å"sideline.â⬠Players can do three things with the ball: ââ¬Å"dribbleâ⬠(bounce) the ball,à ââ¬Å"passâ⬠the ball to a teammate, or ââ¬Å"shootâ⬠the ball at the hoop. The player with the ball tries to keep the ball and not let the other team get it. Once a player commits five fouls, he is no longer allowed to play in the game, and player on the bench must go in the game immediately. OFFICIALS In a game of basketball there are a number of people who are not from either team, that are there to help. They are called officials. Officials are very important because without them the game would not run as efficiently. Here is a list of some of these people: Umpire There are either one or two umpires in a game of basketball. It is the umpiresââ¬â¢ job to make the game more fair by enforcing the rules of the game. The umpires take into consideration the spirit and intent of the player before making any call. In the NBA and WNBA, the term ââ¬Å"umpireâ⬠is not used; the person who has this role is called the referee. Referee The use of this term varies between rule sets. Under the rules of FIBA (the worldwide governing body for the sport), the NCAA (U.S. college basketball), and NFHS (U.S. high schools), there is one referee in a game of basketball. He is the ââ¬Å"headâ⬠umpire. The referee has all the jobs of the umpires along with a couple more responsibilities. He is also the one that makes the final decision for most problems and is the one who throws the ball up for the tip off the start of the match. Time Keeper There is one timekeeper whose job is to keep track of the time and to tell the umpires when time for each quarter has run out. He is also in control of adding the scores onto the scoreboard. Scorekeeper There is one scorekeeper whose job is to keep track of and record all points scored, shots attempted, fouls made and timeouts called. Assistant Scorekeeper There is one assistant scorekeeper in a game of basketball. his job is to assist the scorekeeper, by telling him the players who score points, and to hold up a number for each foul called, showing everyone the number of fouls the specified player has for the game. Shot Clock Operator There is one shot clock operator and his job in to keep resetting and holding the device when needed or told to by an umpire. This person needs to have good reflexes and quickness, as he has to quickly reset the timer when the game resumes. It should also be noted that fans and media in North America will often use ââ¬Å"refereeâ⬠toà describe all on-court officials, whether their formal titles are ââ¬Å"refereeâ⬠, ââ¬Å"umpireâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"crew chiefâ⬠. BASKETBALL TERMS There are some basketball terms which players have to understand when playing the game. Here are some terms: Free throw is a basketball throw from the free-throw line from either personal, technical, unsportsmanlike or disqualifying fouls. Each free-throw made is worth one point. The amount of free-throws attempted are determined by the following: missed field goal and a drawn foul will result in 2 free throws made field goal and a drawn foul will result in 1 free throw missed 3-point attempt and a drawn foul will result in 3 free throws made 3-point attempt and a drawn foul will result in 1 free throw unsportsmanlike foul will result in 2 free throws and the same teamââ¬â¢s possession. (In the NBA and WNBA, this foul is called a ââ¬Å"flagrant foulâ⬠, with the same penalty.) technical foul will result in 2 free throws and the same teamââ¬â¢s possession. (In the NBA and WNBA, technical fouls result in 1 free throw instead of 2.) Field goal is any made shot in normal play. Field goals are worth 2 points, unless the shooter was outside the three-point line, in which case it is worth 3 points. Personal foul is any contact, committed by a player of the other team, thought, by the umpires, to have caused a disadvantage. Technical foul is a violation of certain basketball rules. They include: fighting or threatening to fight with another personà entering the basketball court when it is not a substitution time a player being out of bounds (away from the court) to gain an advantage having too many players play on the courtà refusing to sit on the benchà returning to play when a player is disqualified (loses his privileges to play) yelling and/or swearing at another player or an official Rebound is the act of catching the basketball after a shot has been attempted, but missed. Assist is to pass a teammate the ball, which then the teammate immediately shoots into the basketball ring successfully. 2-3 dribbles are allowed after catching the ball for assist to be counted. Steal is to take the ball away from a person who is dribbling, shooting or passing without physically touching the person (committing a foul). Turnover is whenà the team that controls the ball loses control and the other team gains control. Walkover is the automatic victory of a team if the opposing team withdraws, is disqualified or there is not any competition at all. Substitution is the act of replacing a player from the court to an another player sitting on the bench. Double dribble is when a player dribbles the ball and picks it up and then dribbles it again without having shot or passed it. Dribbling the ball with two hands is also a double dribble. If a player double dribbles, the ball is automatically given to the other team. Carry is when a player physically turns the ball over with their hands whilst dribbling it. Travel is when a player in possession of the ball moves both feet without dribbling the ball. If a player travels, the ball is automatically given to the opposing team. Shot clock is a clock designed to limit the time a team has to shoot a basketball. The shot clock is different in different leagues, but it is usually between 24 seconds and 35 seconds. After time runs out, the ball is automatically given to the opposing team unless they shot, before the clock runs out, and hit the rim or the ball enters the basket. Substitute (subs) is when a player on the bench swaps for a player on the court. The player on the bench is allowed to play and the player sits on the bench. Jump ball happens at the start of every game. This is where the ball gets thrown up from the centre circle and one person from each team jumps for it, aiming to hit it to one of his team mates. Alternating possession At the start of the game there is a jump ball. Whichever team ââ¬Å"winsâ⬠the jump ball gets the arrow pointed towards their goal. Clutch is a shot made at a difficult moment in the game, usually when the shot clock is about to run out or the team, losing by 1 or 2 points, suddenly wins the game, because of the clutch shot. Backcourt violation is when a player crosses the half-court line and walks backwards over the line while in possession of the ball, or passes to another player who is behind the half-court line. Note that this rule does not apply if a defensive player taps the ball, and it goes beyond the half-court line, and the offensive player retrieves it in the ââ¬Å"backcourtâ⬠. 3 second violation is when a player stands in the lane (an area marked by the big square in front of the basket) for more than 3 seconds. The offensive team that commits a 3à second violation will lose the possession of the ball. The defensive team that commits a 3 second violation will receive a technical foul. 8 or 10 second violation is when the team with the ball fails to advance the ball past the center line within the allowed time. The offensive team will lose possession. The allowed time is 8 seconds in international play, the NBA, and WNBA, and 10 seconds in menââ¬â¢s college basketball and high school play for both boys and girls. This violation does not exist in womenââ¬â¢s college basketball. Positions in basketball In professional basketball teams, each player has a position. A position is a job or role that a player has to take part in to play the game. If everyone is doing their job correctly, the team is usually successful. Point guard (PG) (1) ââ¬â point guards are responsible for leading the team on offense. They have to take the ball out (to dribble the ball halfway across their teamââ¬â¢s court side into the opposing teamââ¬â¢s court side) and plan an ââ¬Å"attackâ⬠or ââ¬Å"playâ⬠ââ¬â to pass the ball to a player and he passes on to another player and so on till a player shoots the basketball. Point guards can be small, but they have to be very fast and possess good ball-handling. But the most important thing for the PG is a wide view. PG should control the game when on offense. Thatââ¬â¢s why PG is called ââ¬Ëthe coach on the courtââ¬â¢. Shooting guard (SG) (2) ââ¬â shooting guards generally are a little bit taller and slower than point guards. They have to make good shots from far distances (like three-point lines). Small forward (SF) (3) ââ¬â small forwards are generally taller than both point guards and shooting guards. They are the teamââ¬â¢s most versatile player, doing everything from rebounding and assisting to scoring. Power forward (PF) (4) ââ¬â power forwards are usually one of the strongest players who play inside the 3 point line. Their job is to receive rebounds from under the basket and score in the opposing teamââ¬â¢s basket, although it is unusual for a power forward to score most points for the team. Center (C) (5) ââ¬â Centers will usually be the tallest player on the team. They score close to the basket, rebound and block shots on the defensive end. They also start the game in the tip off. Other positions, more usual in professional basketball teams, are used in basketball. Swingman ââ¬â a basketball player who can play both small forward and shooting guard positions. Cornerman ââ¬â a basketball player who can play both power forward and small forwardà positions. Point forward ââ¬â a basketball player who can play both point guard and forward (either small forward or power forward) positions. Optical Character Recognition for Kids Learning Essay
Education is the learning and development which results from this process of teaching or training. It is the academic discipline dealing with teaching and learning methods in the schools. Learning starts at home and the parents are their first teachers to their kids. When they are about 4 to 6 years of age, parents are starting to bring their children at school where they are able to learn not only the basic skills such as reading and writing but also to develop simple logic and abstract ideas like numbers, shapes, colors, time and many more. Yet, learning first how to write is by far the most important lesson of all and is the priority of all those people who are teaching childhood education. Writing is a skill that is used in all academic coursework as well as through a personââ¬â¢s professional and personal life. Children learn about reading and writing by thinking about the sounds that words make and what those words look like when written out. When children are eager to learn something, they want to explore it themselves. Nowadays, childrenââ¬â¢s potentials are determined by their ability to learn the basics of writing and reading at their very early age (Patterson C (2008). Child Development. New York: McGraw-Hill. ). In todayââ¬â¢s complicated world, the continuing advancing of technology has opened many doors when it comes to education. Technology has become an influential factor when it comes to education. This gives students the opportunity to choose what they are interested in learning. Computers have started to make a huge impact in our lives and begun to show up not only in only offices and households, but also in classrooms, as they have become cheaper, more powerful, and easier to use. There have been many software applications developed for the purpose of education and for use in the classroom. Computers and mobile phones are used in developed countries both to complement established education practices and develop new ways of learning such as the concept of E-learning. It is the unifying term to describe the fields of online learning, web-based training, and technology-delivered instruction. By adding interactivity to teaching, Not only wo uld the children will be able to see what is involved, but he or she would be able to learn from hands on experience. Computers can be a very effective way of accomplishing this. The use of computers in Elementary schools is basically vision as teaching and learning aid besides develop computer literacy amongst the children. Computer Aided Instruction will help us to make the present teaching learning process joyful, interesting and easy to understand through audio-visual aids. Teachers will be resourced with Multimedia Contents to explain topic better. Overall it will help us to improve quality of education in long term. In this study, the proponents develop software that will be an aid for teaching children how to write by using stylus and be able to write on the touch screen monitor of the computer. A stylus is a pen-shaped instrument that is used to draw images, select from menus and write characters which come with different devices that contain touch screens. The following are some of the reasons the proponents have develop such software: (1)Time constraints. Considering it applied in classes, children are pressured in terms of completing a given handwriting task which affects their performance. (2)Level of activities. Occasionally, activities that are held in classes may be inappropriate when it comes to the capabilities of the students. (3)Limited school activities. Children are only provided limited amount of activities in school to learn a specific area in school particularly handwriting. (4)Assessment procedure. Usually, it takes time for the instructor to evaluate the handwriting activities that they are providing for the kids. The basic handwriting software for kids will show certain gif format containing simple steps on how to write the letters and audio sounds to identify what letter should be written. Children can trace uppercase and lowercase letters using the stylus and will be evaluated afterwards in a friendly manner. The program will also contain a different order of teaching a child to write the alphabet and works can be saved. The program has a quiz section that assesses the learning of the child without the aided instruction of gif format. To help children to construct correct handwriting, there would seem to be a case for the use of ruled writing spaces and assist them to follow the proper procedure of writing a specific character and obtain precise strokes. There would also a field references or guidelines for line and cursive character in the every letter of alphabet. Error messages, if used, need to be in a simple English language that the children can easily understand. A different level of practicing is considered to be sure that children will be able to take hold of the writing technique through gif images that shows how characters should be constructed properly. An erase function will also be available as a feature for the children to make them avoid discouragement from scribbling out and overwriting. The children should see at the screen the characters they intend to write and see the results produced after the program recognizes it and be able to see the evaluation of their performance afterwards. The group will use an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) which is a subsystem for pattern recognition. Character recognition identifies the input handwriting and translates it into a machine language or the ASCII. With OCR, the software could identify and evaluate the childââ¬â¢s handwriting performance. When the child inputs the character the OCR will read and identifies whether the character is valid. If the character is valid the evaluation will takes place and calculate the handwriting performance of the children. There will be a set of points within a specific character that has a corresponding score. Children will be evaluated according to the use of Back Propagation algorithm. Back Propagation algorithm will trace the input characters and get the error percentage. A deduction will be conducted to the total score of the user if he fails to follow the designated ordinates. Scores will be evaluated and will be shown as follows; Very Good, Good and Fair. The software that will be implemented will serve as a teaching tool in developing handwriting skills of kids ages 6 and below only which can be used by pre-school teachers and parents as well. It is only an alternative way of teaching basic handwriting rather than the traditional way of learning. The validity of the software can be tested by parents, homeschoolers and teachers who have acquired the skills and knowledge in teaching the traditional process especially those teachers in nurseries and kindergarten. Chapter II Review of Related Literature Childrenââ¬â¢s Early Age Children ages 4-5-6 need some attention and care and parents must be able to identify the interest of the child and what they are capable of. In this stage they will be responsible but they still need assistance. They can do simple things on their own like wearing clothes, tying their shoes, brushing their teeth and others. In this stage of development they have their own specific interests like playing blocks, dawdling and others. Play with other children who need what she needs and like what she likes, who understand her because they are the same age, becomes very important to most children. By the age of 4-5 children can now accept the social interaction with other children. (Irma Simonton Black, Children from 4-5-6) There are other activities in this early age that are very short tempered to parents like dawdling but according to Black ââ¬Å"Dawdling may be a childââ¬â¢s indirect way of asking for help, of asking for the warmth and quick affection of his babyhoodâ⬠. If the child needs parentââ¬â¢s help they must give them a full hand but remember that there are some help that can be done by the child like putting and tying their shoes. The role of a parent is to be helpful, sympathetic and patient. Parents must also praise for the things that the child accomplish rather than disapproval of the things the he/ she did not do. Children are very easy to learn but they must need guidance and care. ThE-learning capabilities of children need time and patience. (Ruth Mason 2000) Schoolchild Development The E-learning capabilities of this early stage is different they can develop a sense of logic and often sticks with a problem until he/she has solved it. They can gain a sense of satisfaction from tackling simple number problems. These new ability gives confidence in developing and expressing on their own point of view. They can also grasp more abstract ideas, like numbers, time and distance. During this time the brain undergoes its most dramatic growth, and children rapidly develop the cognitive capacity that enables them to become intellectually curious and creative thinkers. In this child development they can now focus on their interest like reading books on related subject that are taught in the school. They can now express their point of view and reasoning. The skills most often affected are: reading, writing, listening, speaking, reasoning, and doing math. ââ¬Å"Learning disabilities (LD) vary from person to person. One person with LD may not have the same kind of learning problems as another person with LDâ⬠according to National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities. Learning Disability is not a sickness but this situation are caused by the different approach of processing the brain. Learning Disability does not include visual, hearing and motor disability and also mental retardation. There are no concrete sign of having learning disability but by observing them you can actually identify and these signs are helpful: â⬠¢ may have troublE-learning the alphabet, rhyming words, or connecting letters to their sounds; â⬠¢ may make many mistakes when reading aloud, and repeat and pause often; â⬠¢ may not understand what he or she reads; â⬠¢ may have real trouble with spelling; â⬠¢ may have very messy handwriting or hold a pencil awkwardly; â⬠¢ may learn language late and have a limited vocabulary; â⬠¢ may have trouble understanding jokes, comic strips, and sarcasm; â⬠¢ may have trouble following directions; â⬠¢ may mispronounce words or use a wrong word that sounds similar; And to help children with this disability parents must identify the strengths of their child. The parents must praise the good things about their child with this disability .And for teachers they can help their child with such disability by: â⬠¢ breaking tasks into smaller steps, and giving directions verbally and in writing; â⬠¢ giving the student more time to finish schoolwork or take tests; â⬠¢ letting the student with reading problems use textbooks-on-tape (available through Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, listed under Organizations); â⬠¢ letting the student with listening difficulties borrow notes from a classmate or use a tape recorder; and â⬠¢ letting the student with writing difficulties use a computer with specialized software that spell checks, grammar checks, or recognizes speech. (National Dissemination for Learning Disability) Childrenââ¬â¢s School Level This is often categorized in pre-school and kindergarten levels. Pre-school is the preparation ground for children, this shows how kids will they be when they are 7 because of different aspects. In this level of education children only go to school for an hour which includes playing and 20-30 minutes of listening. The schools strategize a three days per week at an academic program and two days per week at a play-based school, hoping to achieve the best of both worlds. Preschool approach is commonly a play-based program to enjoy child academically and socially. After they excel in preschool year they can now step to kindergarten where they can formally in different approach. (Laura Davy, 2007) Kindergarten is being called nowadays as a new first grade of education. But be sure that your child is ready for kindergarten and there are signs to identify that are being analyzed by parents. This checklist are created by the National Center Disabilities Inc,. The purpose of kindergarten is to show the child the good feelings about learning and school. This is the building block for stepping in first grade. The curriculum starts by building familiarity with a wide number of aspects of the written and spoken word. In kindergarten the general trend of teaching is basic literacy and writing t hat is covered for first grader. The students taught a basic curriculum in all subjects, including science, social studies, and arts; but the most important academic topics will be literacy, handwriting exercise and math, which underlie everything else to come. This is important because research shows that when children are taught how to do it, they are also being taught how to learn and how to express themselves. Spelling becomes a problem; math becomes a problem because they reverse their numbers. All of these subjects would be much easier for these kids to learn if handwriting was an automatic processâ⬠. In the research led by the professor of Venderbilt University, Steve Graham he found out that teachers believe that students with fluent handwriting produced written assignments that were superior in quantity and quality and resulted in higher grades aside from being easier to read. Evidence is growing that handwriting fluency is a fundamental building block of learning. It should be exciting and an enjoyable activity through which children can experience success. If we stop teaching penmanship, it will not only hasten the dreaded day when brides acknowledge wedding gifts by e-mail; the bigger danger is, theyââ¬â¢ll be composed even more poorly than they already are. According to Baggett, changing a childââ¬â¢s handwriting can improve their grades, their behaviour, and their self-esteem. Encourage the child in continuing handwriting practices and praise the work of the children. PRACTICE DAILY Handwriting practice should be scheduled every day but keep lessons short for best results. 4. CORRECT PENCIL GRIP Correct pencil grip allows a writer to write quickly and smoothly, while a tight or awkward grip can hinder writing. 5. PROPER POSTURE Be sure that your child is sitting properly at a surface that is not too high. Her arms should rest comfortably and her feet should be supported (by the floor or a box), rather than hanging loosely. This is to avoid fatigue and bad habits which may develop as a result of improper posture. Monitor your childââ¬â¢s posture regularly. 6. BE PATIENT Improvement in handwriting requires a combination of skills and developmental maturity. Each child will progress at her own rate. Remember that fine motor skills develop more slowly in boys, than gross motor skills. 7. KEEP HANDWRITING SEPARATE Keep handwriting practice or copy work separate from composition and other writing tasks, which require attention to other skills such as focus on content, organizing ideas, editing, spelling, punctuation etc. so that students will not be reluctant to write. Students can learn ââ¬Å"fromâ⬠computersââ¬âwhere technology used essentially as tutors and serves to increase students basic skills and knowledge; and can learn ââ¬Å"withâ⬠computersââ¬âwhere technology is used a tool that can be applied to a variety of goals in the learning process and can serve as a resource to help develop higher order thinking, creativity and research skills (Reeves, 1998; Ringstaff & Kelley, 2002). The primary form of student learning ââ¬Å"fromâ⬠computers is what Murphy, Penuel, Means, Korbak and Whaley (2001) describe as discrete educational software (DES) programs, such as integrated learning systems (ILS), computer-assisted instruction (CAI), and computer-based instruction (CBI). These software applications are also among the most widely available applications of educational technology in schools today, along with word-processing software, and have existed in classrooms for more than 20 year s (Becker, Ravitz, & Wong, 1999). While DES remains the most commonly used approach to computer use in student learning, in more recent years, use of computers in schools has grown more diversified as educators recognize the potential of learning ââ¬Å"withâ⬠technology as a means for enhancing studentsââ¬â¢ reasoning and problem-solving abilities. In part, this shift has been driven by the plethora of new information and communication devices now increasingly available to students in school and at home, each of which offers new affordances to teachers and students alike for improving student achievement and for meeting the demand for 21st century skills describe earlier. No longer limited to school labs, school hours and specific devices, technology access is increasingly centered on the learner experience. Bruce and Levin (1997), for example, look at ways in which the tools, techniques, and applications of technology can support integrated, inquiry-based learning to ââ¬Å"engage children in exploring, thinking, reading, writing, researching, inventing, problem-solving, and experiencing the world.
